Abstract:

Resting on a Mistake: New and Old Keys for Analysis in Philosophy, Music, and Mind

This talk takes up the matter of revising method by drawing out what it has long meant in a broad history to rest on a mistake. The method of most concern falls under the rubric of “analysis.” To the idea of a mistake, I add the idea of error and then, to complete the triad, the accident. The talk offers a witty defense of analysis through the most defamiliarizing paths of errors, mistakes, and accidents. It sweeps through a broad range of literature, back to early music notation practices, although it spotlights the period around 1900 when analysis came so strategically to name a method for philosophy, music, and mind. What inspired the naming of the method in each case as analysis? Did all the proponents agree on the starting point of an analysis—or its end?

Respondents: Prof. Ruth HaCohen-Pinczower, Meishar Landsman
